Rhinoplasty Recovery

Are you thinking about having your nose surgically enhanced and wondering about the rhinoplasty recovery timeline? Many people wonder how long it will take before they can return to their normal schedule and how long before they will be able to see their final results.

How long does rhinoplasty recovery normally take? Most people can go back to work or school after a week or two but it can take an entire year before all the swelling goes down and they are fully healed.

If you understand the process and know what to expect during your rhinoplasty recovery, it can help you be more prepared and help avoid unexpected issues.

What Does a Rhinoplasty Do?

A rhinoplasty reshapes your nose to fix cosmetic imperfections or structural issues. Some people want correction for a nose that looks bulbous, turned up, hooked, or droopy. Others may need to correct a deviated septum, open blocked nasal passages, or fix nostrils that are too wide or small. A nose job can also fix dips or bumps that draw attention to the bridge of your nose or make your nose more proportionate to your face.

What Does A Typical Rhinoplasty Recovery Time Look Like?

Rhinoplasty recovery usually happens in several stages, and many people are able to return to most of their normal schedule in just a few weeks. The average rhinoplasty recovery stages will look something like this:

Average Rhinoplasty Recovery Time
Time Frame Recovery Milestone
1 to 2 weeks Most visible bruising has improved and many people can return to work or school without embarrassment.
3 to 4 weeks Many people can participate in light activities and breathing should become easier as the swelling continues to go down.
4 to 6 weeks About 50% of the swelling should resolve during this time and you may be able to resume more strenuous activities.
(when cleared by your surgeon)
About 3 months You are past the most challenging parts of the recovery and most of the swelling should be gone. The tip of the nose can stay swollen and take up to 12 months to resolve. The good news is that this swelling will not be obvious to others and you will look normal.
12 months+ Final results develop.

Every person heals at their own rate, so your recovery timeline may not be exactly the same.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline Week by Week

Week 1

The first week is usually the most challenging and uncomfortable part of your recovery. It is normal to have a split placed over your nose to help protect it and keep the swelling down during this week while you heal. Most people want to avoid public places and just stay home and rest.

Things you can expect during this first week include:

  • Swelling around your eyes and nose.
  • Bruises under your eyes.
  • Feeling stuffed up with difficulty breathing out of your nose.
  • Pressure or tenderness.
  • Feeling tired.
  • Your surgeon normally removes your split at your first follow-up appointment.

Week 2

Most people feel some instant improvements when the splint is taken off at the end of the first week. During this second week you should begin to feel more comfortable and most of the bruising and swelling should be going away. Many feel ready to go back to school or work by the end of this week.

Weeks 3 to 6

Your nose continues to heal and most of the visible swelling gradually improves. You may still have some numbness or firmness at the tip but this is normal and is usually the last place to heal. Many are approved by their surgeon to participate in light activities.

Months 2 to 3

Most patients start to feel more confident about being seen in public and are feeling like themselves again. About 90% of the swelling is gone by this time and usually the bridge of your nose has more definition, but it can be different for everyone.

Months 4 to 12

The first three months is when you will see and feel the most noticeable parts of your recovery. Months 4 through 12 will require some patience because everything moves pretty slowly after this point.

The tissues in your nose will continue to heal and settle and the swelling at the tip of your nose will finally resolve. The 12-month mark is the point that most surgeons consider your rhinoplasty recovery complete and your final results visible.

What Can Affect Rhinoplasty Recovery?

There are several things that can make a difference in how your recovery progresses. This may include:

  • How complex your surgery is.
  • The type of rhinoplasty technique used.
  • How thick your skin is.
  • Whether this is your first rhinoplasty or a revision.
  • The state of your health.
  • How well you follow your aftercare instructions.

It can take a year before you see the final results of your surgery. One of the biggest surprises for patients who have rhinoplasty surgery is how long the swelling lasts. Frequently Asked Questions

Will rhinoplasty leave visible scars?

Most rhinoplasty procedures leave little to no visible scarring because the incisions are placed inside the nose. More complex surgeries may use small incisions between the nostrils but they normally will fade significantly after a few years.

Can I sleep on my side after rhinoplasty surgery?

You are not able to sleep on your side right after a rhinoplasty because it can aggravate the swelling and put pressure on your healing nose that may change your final results. Most people find that sleeping on their back with their head elevated works best for them during the first few months.

Is it normal for your nose to be numb after rhinoplasty?

Yes. Temporary numbness at and around the tip of your nose is a normal side effect of rhinoplasty surgery. The sensation should gradually return as the nerves heal, which can take several months.

How long before I can wear makeup after rhinoplasty?

You should avoid wearing makeup on or close to your nose until your surgeon tells you it is okay. Usually, they recommend that you wait until the skin on your nose has healed and your incisions are completely closed. It is usually fine to wear makeup on other areas of your face, but you should defer to the guidance of your surgeon.
