Breast reconstruction surgery may take several hours, depending on the technique used and whether one or both breasts are reconstructed.
You are given general anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the entire surgery.
Your surgeon creates carefully placed incisions and rebuilds the breast using an implant, your own tissue, or both.
The reconstructed breast is shaped to create a natural-looking contour and improve symmetry.
After the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures, dressings, and a special surgical bra that will help provide stability and support during your healing process.
After a short period of observation where you will be monitored, you will be discharged to continue your recovery comfortably at home.

Possible risks include a reaction to anesthesia, infection, bleeding, hematoma, asymmetry, or changes in breast shape.
You can expect some tiredness, soreness, swelling, and discomfort. Light activity is encouraged, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided during recovery.
Tissue flap reconstruction may require a two- to three-day hospital stay. Physical activity is limited for about six weeks, and drains are usually removed after one to two weeks.
Before surgery, you will attend a preoperative appointment, review your instructions, and receive a list of medications and supplements to avoid. Smokers will be advised to stop smoking before and after surgery.
